Magnificent Murals

Worcester has traditionally been artistically rich, and it seems as time goes on, it only gets better.  Now, it’s time to gear up for Pow! Wow!, an all-time first in the area.

What’s Pow? Wow!?

It’s a ten-day, ten mural festival, and the electrifying event kicks off on August 26.

Art enthusiasts and skilled professionals alike will almost-certainly be captivated by the larger-than-life paintings gracing assorted downtown buildings.  Actually, the exhibit goal is to attract over 10,000 nearby and out-of-town visitors within a 10-day span.

Local and international artists, from areas like Massachusetts, Texas, New York, California, Georgia, New Zealand, Russia, Brazil, Germany, Nepal, Spain, and Mexico, created the visual wonders.  Interspersed amongst the frescoes will be live painting demonstrations and planned happenings such as a coffee shop assembly with questions and answers, a blessing by New England Indian Elders, a festival kickoff, a lecture series, gallery shows, a beer garden, food trucks, live music, a closing party, and so much more.

Here a few of the scheduled activities taking place.

  • Festival Kickoff Fiesta—August 26 and August 27, 8 p.m.
  • Secret Walls Worcester—August 27, 8 p.m. to 11:59 p.m.
  • Artist Talk with Tavar Zawacki—August 30, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Artist Talk with Askew One—August 31, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • “Entering Worcester”—September 1, 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
  • Pow! Wow! Closing Party—September 2 and September 3, 800 p.m.
  • Block Party presented by Lock 50—September 3, 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Without a doubt, Pow! Pow! Worcester will pack an excitingly powerfully punch, and it’s likely to appeal to a wide range of age categories.

Jasper Wong, founder of Pow! Wow! Worldwide, has said that a primary goal of the event is to beautify cities with murals from around the world.  Wong, inspired by the Native American Pow Wow that incorporates an outward presentation of music, dance, culture, and art, chose the name to display his own brand of creative celebration.  Pow! Wow! has already presented its imaginative merriment in places like Hawaii, Japan, Hong Kong, Long Beach, and Taiwan.  Incredibly, Worcester is next!
