Irina Parfenova explains the choice of the exhibition title “Present Perfect Continuous.”  “This tense is used to describe an action or actions that started in the past and continued until recently or that continue into the future. The term being used predominantly in grammar, is applicable to life in general.  Since childhood art whas been an integral part of my life. I used images to share my experiences and tell stories. I also used images to create environments that were purely imaginative. This way I could make my dreams come alive. Everything was possible. Over time living and art making became one continuous process. As I grew, my work underwent changes and I seemed to tap into the aspect that fascinated me most. Life as a continuous series of transformations.”

Ms. Parfenova  embraces the representation of change in both her artistic process and pictures. She starts her work with a broad initial idea that the visible world is a combination of known rules and unpredictable impulses. “ At the beginning, I can mentally place an image on the surface before I make the first mark. I have a vision and a strategy. As my project develops, I may change direction given an unexpected or chance observation in the subject to reinforce the essential . Conceptually, I use representational imagery to accomplish a certain atmosphere, rather than to tell a story. The images serve as triggers to help the viewer capture the sequence of events and to respond emotionally and intellectually. Technically, my works are based on dynamic compositions, strong action lines, bold chromatic changes, blurred edges, objects that project and recede within the pictorial space. I mostly work form life in oil, utilizing a so-called “indirect” painting method. The approach allows me to spend multiple sessions in front of my subject developing the composition and mastering the details. The oil painting  selection for the exhibition ranges from still life, to landscape, to figure. Although personal and intimate, I hope that the art works will resonate with a broad audience.
