August is a Beach!

Okay, summer’s window in New England is not very large.  Still, while the opportunity is here, why not jump through and make the most of it?

What can be more “August” than to bask in the sun on a colorful blanket (with sunscreen, of course), leap in the lively waves, study the tide as it rushes to and fro, watch toddlers construct mud pies in the sand, and marvel with teens as they engage in a lively game of volleyball.  Afterwards, as a bonus, the salt-infused air accompanies us back to the car.  Clearly, summer is a glorious day at the beach.

So where do we go for this type of pleasure?  The options are many!  Let’s look at a few.

  • Ocean Beach Park.  This public Connecticut beach is regarded as one of the best in the state.  It features a long boardwalk, large pool, water slide, playground, rides, restaurants, ice cream stand, evening entertainment, and so much more.  Still, the best feature attached to this delightful location is unspoiled beauty.
  • Rocky Neck.  Also in Connecticut and located within a state park, this wonderful locale boasts hiking trails, picnic areas, and bird-watching sites.  In addition, it sits near delightful Niantic Village.  Rocky Neck offers the powdery kind of sand that many of us yearn for when searching for the perfect beach.
  • White Horse Beach.  WHB is located off 3A in Plymouth, MA.  While only a small section is public (in the southern part), the marvelous shoreline and immaculate sand (and dunes) beckon sun bathers to return year after year.
  • Cape Cod.  Need more be said?  The Cape is famous for its exceptional beaches.  Places such as Race Point in Provincetown, Nauset Beach in Orleans, and Head of the Meadow in Truro, seem sure to please the ardent beach lover and novice alike.  The white sand and miles of shoreline in this illustrious area have stolen many a “summer” heart.
  • Scarborough State Beach.  Rhode Island is nicknamed the Ocean State, so we know that fabulous beaches are sure to preside here.  Scarborough is one of the state’s most popular, with over 2,000 feet of shoreline.  A modernized pavilion, observation tower, and picnic area, work to make this trip worth the effort.
  • First Beach.  So who doesn’t love Newport, RI?  First Beach (also known as Easton’s Beach), is within close proximity to the famous Cliff Walk.  The area has a carousel for children, playground, food stand, and changing facility.  If you are going to be at the beach anyway, be sure to catch a glimpse of the magnificent scenery from that legendary Walk!

Summer comes and goes so quickly in New England.  Subsequently, we must capitalize on warmth while it is here.

Beaches make us smile, and their magic fills our hearts with youthful joy.  Luckily, there are so many to choose from in our well-positioned region.
