Autumn Flowers

When the evening breeze becomes cooler and our Monthly Planners flip to September, clear indications are in the air (and on the calendar) that summer is departing.  And although feelings of newness and excitement accompany each coming season, some of us, particularly as summer departs, wish to hold on to a vestige of its glory.  What better way to prolong summer’s charm than with flowers?

Fall flowers grace the outdoors with a continuity of visual beauty, and our world remains colored with pleasure.  Medleys of fragrances captivate our senses, and our awareness seems refreshed.  But which flowers endure September temperatures?  A few favorites are listed below.

  • Petunias.  Petunias fare quite well in cooler weather.  They come in a multitude of shades and typically last quite nicely into mid fall.  A variation called The Wave is especially appealing because it typically does not require deadheading like some other varieties.  (Deadheading is picking out the discolored and withering blossoms to encourage more flower growth).
  • Chrysanthemums.  Okay, most of us are familiar with mums.  These durable flowers have graced the landscape of many a home, flowerbed, and building.  Their loveliness ranges from white to gold to red to purple (and many other colors in between!).  The vigorous nature of mums allows them to be enjoyed well into October.
  • Pansies.  Pansies are a sought-after autumn favorite.  They complement many other fall varieties because they add the perfect pizzazz of color.  Pansies come in solid shades and multi-tone varieties.
  • Marigolds.  The quintessential-looking fall flower with its rust and gold radiance (kind of matching the fall foliage), marigolds are bright and cheery and easy to grow.  Different varieties of this hearty flower abound, and their scent is wonderful!

The above are but a few of the “flower finery” that survive part of the autumn chill.

Some easy tips to remember?

Plant at least 6” apart to allow for growth.
Make certain there is adequate sunlight.
Regularly water to hydrate;
Deadhead browning or decaying blossoms.

The result, splendid fall flowers!
