Autumn Foliage Part II

Last week we touched upon a couple of Northern New England regions to appreciate the autumn foliage.  This week we will make a few Bay State stops.

October is the month to enjoy gorgeous color in this “steeped in history” state.  Each geographical area offers a wonderful display of the foliage experience.  So where should you begin your Massachusetts excursion?  Northern leaves tend to turn first, so perhaps think about starting there.  The locations below outline a few thoughts.

  • Essex Seaport Byway.  This beautiful stretch meanders through romantic seaport villages and enchanting farming communities.  Begin on Route 1A and travel through charming towns like Rowley and Newburyport (remember to take along a map!).  Connect onto Route 133 and enjoy the bedroom communities of Ipswich and Essex (clams anyone?).  Think about wrapping up your journey by catching Route 127 and taking in the seacoast splendor of Gloucester and Rockport.  (Be sure to stop for lunch, particularly if you like seafood).
  • Revolutionary Dynamism.  Boston and Cambridge may be carved in history, but they are also rich in color.  Begin your trip along the Charles River in Boston and travel along Route 2A into Cambridge.  Savor the scenery as you continue north through the historic towns of Lexington and Concord.  Between the notable monuments and multihued trees, you could end up on “sensory overload!”
  • Jacob’s Ladder.  This Route 20, 33-mile trail extending from Lee to Westfield is one of the most splendid extensions in the country!  The foliage is fabulous, and you may even want to enjoy the canoeing opportunities and craft shop activities as you travel along your way.
  • Cape Cod.  Crossing the Sagamore Bridge in the summertime can mean stressing over a 7-mile backup.  Autumn, however, bestows a pace.  Begin your trip on 6A and tour along Old King’s Highway as you delight in the quaint towns of Sandwich, Barnstable, and Brewster.  While you’re there, consider exploring the Sandwich Glass Museum and Cape Cod Museum of Natural History.  Why not combine a multitude of pleasures in the same day?

There are many states down South and to the West that have beautiful fall foliage, but few compare to the breathtaking brilliance in New England.  And although each season bequeaths its own interpretation of loveliness, autumn presents a type of appeal that lingers throughout the year.

So, before the winter cold arrives: Enjoy Now!
