Medicaid Benefits

Medicaid is a federal health insurance program designed to assist some low-income individuals with their medical needs.  A person’s income and assets must fall below a specified level in order to be considered for the program.  Medicaid was formed under the Social Security Act in 1965 and is funded by both the federal government and individual states.  The program is managed by the state, and states might have their own heading for the plan.  For example, the program in Massachusetts is called “MassHealth.”

There are several fundamental guidelines at the federal level which determines how Medicaid is structured.  In addition, there are also state regulations, so eligibility requirements will vary from state to state.  Some states may choose to subcontract Medicaid insurance out to private companies, while other states submit payments directly to the provider.  At both the federal and state level, eligibility requirements have periodically undergone changes.

Not every low-income individual qualifies for Medicaid.  Other considerations such a citizenship, age, resources, etc., are also used.  Disabled children who live at home, as well as elderly individuals living in nursing homes, are two examples in which Medicaid guidelines might deviate from typical rules.

Most individuals who enter nursing homes do not immediately qualify for Medicaid.  The majority of states do, however, permit residents to spend down their assets until they reach eligibility levels.  Normally, nursing home residents pay for their care in one of three ways: self pay, long-term healthcare Insurance, or Medicaid.

The list below outlines, but is not limited to, some covered Medicaid services:

* Doctor visits

* Hospital (inpatient and outpatient)

* Pharmaceuticals

* Laboratory Services

* Transportation to doctor and/or hospital visits

* Nursing home cost for approved facilities

As the federal government and individual states undergo fiscal challenges, certain Medicaid benefits might become affected. Should this occur, some elderly could face cutbacks in their medical care.   Healthcare is a crucial topic facing our nation today.  It is extremely important to stay informed and contact legislators if there are concerns.
