Natural Household Cleaners

When it comes to household cleaning, some of us believe we must use strong chemicals or expensive sprays to achieve our goal; this is not always the case.  Sometimes products we have hanging around the house are quite effective in getting the job done.  The list below examines some inexpensive alternatives to pricey cleaners.

  • Ammonia. Ammonia possesses disinfectant properties and kills germs.  A mixture of water (two parts) and ammonia (one part) is quite effectual in cleaning kitchen appliances, bath and toilet areas, and chrome fixtures.  However, ammonia is not recommended for use on granite, marble, or other stone surfaces.  In addition, it can be toxic, so use sparingly, ventilate properly, and NEVER mix ammonia with bleach; poisonous gases will form.
  • Vinegar. Vinegar is a wonderful natural cleaner!  It works to rid the home of bacteria, mold, germs, and is safe for use on many surfaces.  Vinegar mixed with water can clean sinks, showers, laminate countertops, stoves, refrigerators, etc.  Vinegar can also be used undiluted to take away inner toilet stains.  And more?  Two or three tablespoons added to the dishwasher helps keep dishes and glasses stay sparkly.
  • Baking soda. Baking soda effectively absorbs smells from the refrigerator and freezer.  For optimal effectiveness, it is best to replace the box every three to four months.  Baking soda can also be mixed with water to clean stoves, ovens, sinks, tile, and more.  Other uses for baking soda?  Place a small amount on your toothbrush to whiten teeth or sprinkle in the cat box to help take away odors.
  • Lemon Juice. Lemon juice can be squeezed on cutting boards or laminate countertops to clean and disinfect.  Lemon can also brighten copper pans, polish chrome fixtures, clean silver, and remove tarnish from brass.  In addition, a sliced lemon can be ground in the garbage disposal to remove unpleasant odors.

Some people have developed a strong fondness for their regular cleaners and will not deviate, while others are willing to try something new.  In tough economic times, saving a few dollars is extremely important.  Simple products we keep around the kitchen might help us do exactly that!
