Activities That Help Keep Your Loved One Vital

Keeping active is extremely important to all segments of the population, and nursing home residents are no exception. Activities enhance quality of life and increase a sense of happiness.

Some people naively assume that nursing home residents live primarily on memories, and activities are merely there to help pass the time. Without a doubt memories are precious, but they are precious for the young and old alike. If we understand that each stage of life builds upon the former, then we know that all periods are vital, and there are beautiful memories to be made no matter what stage we are in! Therefore, staying active according to one’s ability is crucial! However, not all nursing home residents have the same likes. Therefore, a variety of scheduled and unscheduled activities are available to help keep the mind and body fit. The list below outlines some favorites:

  • Birthdays-It’s a celebration! Individuals may participate in cake decorating or card making for the birthday gal or guy. This lends to a sense of contribution, and eating cake afterwards is always fun!
  • Crafts-Children in civic and church groups often make arts and crafts for nursing home residents, but residents can also teach children important skills such as painting, crocheting, needlepoint, sewing, or knitting. Handmade treasures might be donated to charitable organizations: maybe providing the warmth of a woolen cap to a needy child or aesthetic loveliness of a picture to a soup kitchen’s walls.
  • Musical events-Music feeds the soul! Musicians come in from the outside to entertain, and in-house sing-a-longs provide cheer to the gathering room. Even less-active residents can enjoy musical get-togethers.
  • Bingo anyone? Bingo and other games foster a sense of participation and camaraderie in a community-based setting.
  • Trips and Tours-Periodic tours and restaurant luncheons afford residents the ability to interact with those outside the nursing home community. These new experiences positively add to a resident’s memories.
  • Fitness Program-Moderate activity two to three times per week (or more) can boost energy levels and increase blood flow to the organs. The exercise regimen need not be overly structured to be beneficial (maybe lifting a can of peas on a regular basis?). Consistent movement reaps rewards for the body and mind.

Perhaps in the beginning, some residents in nursing facilities feel as if they are losing control over their decision-making ability. Yet, activities can assist residents in regaining a sense of control. Thus, it is very important for nursing home residents to become involved in their surrounding environment. Activities contribute to feelings of self worth, satisfaction, and, well, wonderful memories!
