When a loved one needs help with daily living, it can be hard to know what the right next step is. Sometimes, the best option isn’t a long-term move—it’s a short-term stay that provides care, comfort, and peace of mind. This is where respite care in assisted living comes in.
At Briarwood Retirement Community, we are pleased to offer a new respite suite in our assisted living community. This furnished, private studio apartment gives families a flexible, short-term care option without a long-term commitment.
Want to learn more about the program? Let’s take a closer look at what respite care is, why it can be so helpful, and how our program at Briarwood works.
What Is Respite Care in Assisted Living?
Respite care is short-term, temporary care for an older adult. It’s designed to give family caregivers a way to ensure their loved one receives the support they need when at-home care isn’t an option for one reason or another. Stays can last from 30 days to a couple of months, depending on the situation.
During a respite stay, the guest receives all the benefits of assisted living, from assistance with ADLs to fulfilling social interactions with staff and residents.
When Might Respite Care Be Helpful?
Families turn to respite care for many reasons, such as:
Recovery after illness or injury
If someone is discharged from the hospital, rehab, or a nursing center but isn’t quite ready to return home, a respite stay can provide extra time and support for recovery.
When caregivers need to step away for a temporary period
Caring for a loved one is rewarding but can also be exhausting. Respite care allows caregivers to travel or focus on other responsibilities while knowing their loved one is in good hands.
Trial run for assisted living
Sometimes, families and their loved ones aren’t sure if assisted living is the right choice. A short-term stay offers the chance to experience the lifestyle, meet the staff, and see how it feels — without the commitment of a permanent move.
The Benefits for Families and Guests
Peace of mind for caregivers
Knowing your loved one is safe, well cared for, and engaged in daily activities helps ease stress and worry.
Comfort and companionship for guests
Respite care guests enjoy home-cooked meals, planned programs, and the company of others. This can help prevent loneliness and encourage social connection.
Flexibility
Because stays are temporary, families can choose the best time frame for their needs.
