Barbara Berka to Lead Panel Discussion On Space

On Saturday, April 21st, Barbara Berka, known to Briarwood residents as Editor of the News and Notes, will put down her red pencil and don her space helmet. She will open a panel discussion to be held at 2pm at the Aurora Hotel in Worcester.

Barbara, who researched and wrote the text on the Goddard Memorial located at the corner of Goddard Memorial Drive and Apricot St. in Worcester, will begin the forum with a review of Robert Goddard’s contributions to space exploration. His first liquid fuel rocket was built and developed in Worcester but successfully launched in Auburn, on March 16, 1926.

Representatives of Worcester industries will discuss their roles leading up to the moon landing. The new ARTSWorcester exhibition at the Aurora titled “T-Minus: Worcester to the Moon” will have available an actual moon-lander strut made in Worcester by the Honematic Machine Corp. plus other Worcester produced artifacts. This exhibit was done in collaboration with the Worcester Historical Museum.

Briarwood residents will be given the opportunity to use the van to attend the forum and space art exhibit at the Aurora Gallery from 2:00 to 3:00 followed by an artist’s reception from 3:00 to 5:00. Reservations for the van must be made with Anita. (Ruth Heywood)
