“For me, art provides a way to respond to the natural world which gives us comfort and hope in the face of the larger issues which affect us,” says Smith-Viles.” The art of brush painting is a meditative process where focus is on the present moment using one’s mind, eye and hand. The soul’s journey is a life-long endeavor, and finding its expression in art is a joyful experience for me. The changes in my own expressiveness over the years continue to surprise me.”

“I love making art in the simple style of the Asian poet-philosopher using Ink and color to express energy and emotion. I have taught at the Worcester Art Museum for eighteen years specifically in Chinese and Japanese Ink painting.” Smith-Viles’ teachers over the years include, Janet Creasman-Killian, Dr. Hsiung Ju, Ming Chien Liang, Yumei Zhang, and Ning Yeh.
