Kathy Hebert is a versatile artist who works primarily in oil paint. After meeting Helen Van Wyk of Rockport, MA in 1993, Ms. Hebert found her niche in painting. ” Until that point, I was unable to make things look real, remembers Ms. Hebert. “ I simply dabbled with paint. Meeting Van Wyk was a major turning point for me.” Since then Hebert has painted (and will continue to paint) everything – a camel, a llama, apples, pears, pots, chairs, lakes, landscapes, portraits, still life and now abstract art.
Fascinated by light and the shadows it creates, Hebert finds herself enchanted by the search for color in her representational art. Hebert has a passion and joy for painting that she eagerly shares with her adult students, many of whom have taken her “Beginning Art” class at
Assabet Regional Tech in Marlborough, MA. “If I can do it – so can you.” is
her motto. Her book, No Talent Required: My Journey from Paint by Numbers to Art
Instructor records her struggles to become an artist, the summer she spent
studying with Helen Van Wyk and some tools, tips and tricks that have
helped her along her path. MS. Hebert, originally from Burlington, Vermont (and much of her work reflects images of her family and Lake Champlain), obtained a BFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. Originally a Fashion Major, Hebert discovered a fondness for painting inspired by her roommates. Constantly struggling to figure it out, she continued taking classes well after she graduated and through her years as a professional singer. She decided to build her own website using a series of “Dummies” books about 8 years ago. Here she can feature her vast array of paintings as well as those of her students.
The Gallery at Briarwood Committee members are Bill Fyffe, Frank Kimball, Mimi Grenier, Persis Hamilton, Betty Petter, Marilyn Pratt, Barbara Roscoe, David Sawin, Anita Thomas (Staff) and Dot Yagjian.
Upcoming 2016 exhibits for The Gallery at Briarwood will include: May: Plein Air Group, outdoor painters; July: Sid Solomon, watercolor painter; September: Barbara Brosnihan, painter and teacher; and November: WWI Poster exhibit presented by Briarwood resident, Gordon, Lankton.
