The Gallery at Briarwood is showcasing the artwork of 30 residents in the current exhibition, Visions 2025, on view from October 25, 2025, through January 2, 2026. There was standing room only at the show’s opening reception on November 2, 2025, in the Loring Auditorium, as friends, family, and fellow residents gathered to celebrate the artistic talent in their very midst.

Eleven years ago, The Gallery at Briarwood was founded by resident artists with just such a show. Two of the founding members, Marilyn Pratt Walters and Persis Hamilton, both have pieces in the current exhibition and were present at the reception.

After opening remarks, the artists were introduced, and a photograph was taken. Delighted attendees enjoyed a buffet of fresh fruit, cheese, and crackers, along with cider and wine, before moving into The Gallery. An appreciative audience admired the 52 works of art while Jazzed Up, a local keyboard and bass duo, provided entertaining background music.

The Visions 2025 collection features a diverse range of mediums, styles, and subject matter, reflecting the unique mix of personalities found at Briarwood. There are photographs of people, animals, and places, both in color and black and white, traditionally framed and printed on canvas. One photograph of driftwood is so unusual that the artist requested the piece to be displayed alongside the picture to prove its authenticity and delight the viewer with this whimsical quirk of nature.

The fabric arts are represented in delicate embroidery and amazing quilts, so detailed that they give the impression of a photograph. Pastels, watercolors, oils, and acrylics depict the natural world from flowers and animals to landscapes and portraits. Delicate, floral Asian brush paintings keep company with the bold strokes of pen and ink drawings of nudes. The intricacy of miniature collages captivates the viewer as much as the detail of a large 3-D owl with haunting eyes done in enamel over copper.

Over the years, there have been periodic resident shows, interspersed between scheduled 2-month exhibitions of local artists from the community at large, as well as Briarwood. Residents appreciate the variety and creativity that comes with each collection. The Visions 2025 collection is merely following the long-standing tradition of shows featuring artwork exclusively created by residents, leaving the Briarwood community awed and inspired by the talent of neighbors living right next door, down the hall, and across the street.
