FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 12, 2015
Worcester, Massachusetts The Briarwood Community is pleased to announce the second public art exhibit in a series of six for 2015. Uncle Sam Wants You! The Propaganda Posters of WWII will be on display Sunday, March 8, through Thursday, April 30 at the Gallery at Briarwood, 65 Briarwood Circle, Worcester.
The posters are part of an extensive collection owned by Briarwood resident Gordon Lankton. “I distributed them as part of my duties as a Boy Scout during WWII.” He held onto the extra copies and put most of them in a file cabinet. Gordon Lankton recently re-opened that file along with Kent Russell, curator and CEO of the Museum of Russian Icons and members of the Gallery at Briarwood Committee. What they discovered was a literal treasure trove of WWII posters. “Mr. Russell commented: This is a window into the time of the last World War when various government agencies asked the Boy Scouts to distribute posters for display in regional locations across the country. Gordon remembers his boyhood and how he went from store to shop distributing these posters. Gordon went on to become and Eagle Scout,”
Mr. Lankton is the premier American collector of Russian icons, and Founder of the Museum of Russian Icons in Clinton. He is also a collector of African Art and Founder of the Museum of African Art also in Clinton.
The opening reception will take place on Sunday, March 8, between 2 p.m. and 4p.m. Guests will have an opportunity to meet Gordon Lankton and hear him speak about his collection. The reception is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
The exhibit is open Mondays through Fridays from 10am-4pm. Group tours and those wishing to visit on weekends may make arrangements by contacting Anita Thomas at 508-852-9007 or by e-mailing amthomas@briarwoodsl.com.
Remaining exhibits for 2015 will feature Children’s Art from the Worcester Art Museum, The Enamellist Group of The Worcester Center for Crafts, Artist Irina Parfanova, and collections of art by artists of The Genesis Club of Worcester.
