Most people love to travel! Whether visiting Vermont for a weekend getaway or escaping to Hawaii for sunbathing and snorkeling, little else can refresh the senses like time away. Yet, sometimes we approach our vacations with little thought. That’s not always a bad thing, but it’s also wise to plan ahead. The text below lists some informational tidbits you may wish to ponder before departing on your next trip.
Medication. Be sure to take along your medicine! If you are traveling by plane, carry some on your person (in the original container) in the event your luggage becomes lost. Also, think about packing hydrocortisone cream for skin irritation, aspirin or an aspirin-like product for headache or pain, an antacid for stomach upset, and bandages for minor cuts. And, if you suffer from asthma, don’t forget your inhaler!
Senior Discounts. There are assorted senior discounts available for parks, museums, theaters, camping, hotels, etc., so check ahead. One interesting opportunity is a $10 lifetime pass for individuals 62 and over. This senior perk provides admittance to certain recreation areas that charge entrance fees. The pass can be used at the Fish and Wildlife Service, USDA Forest Service, Federal Recreation areas, National Park Service. In addition, discounts at some campsites apply. Senior must be U.S. citizens to take advantage of this offer. For additional information, access http://store.usgs.gov/pass/senior.html.
DVT. Deep-vein thrombosis is a very serious (and potentially fatal) blood clot that typically forms in the lower extremities and can possibly travel to the lungs. People in hospitals face the most danger concerning this type of clot; yet, anyone who is stationary for an extended period of time can be at risk. Hence, when traveling by plane or train, it is important to get up and move around every two hours or so. If journeying by car, stop now and then to exercise your legs. Individuals who have a genetic predisposition to blood clots should discuss their travel plans with their doctors (and perhaps inquire about wearing compression stockings for the trip).
Discount Train Travel for 62 and over. Amtrak offers a 15% discount off their lowest rate on a number of their trains. Some discount exceptions? The Auto Train, Business class, First class, sleeping accommodations, and Acela Express train during weekday travel. If you are considering Amtrak as a means of transportation, it is best to call the company directly to find out specific guidelines.
There are so many things to consider when we go away. We can certainly overanalyze everything, but we can also fail to utilize simple forethought. Traveling is meant to please the senses, so think ahead, relax, and enjoy!
