Worcester Festival of Lights

It’s hard to believe the holiday season is almost upon us. Even so, it is. A coveted enjoyment in Worcester during this celebratory time is the Festival of Lights. In fact, this visual extravaganza inspires seniors and children alike!

Let’s look at a few happenings surrounding this fun-filled event.

  • Holiday tree lighting. Naturally, the tree lighting is the centerpiece of this merry occasion. And, it always brings wonderment to the many faces present.
  • Santa. What would tree lighting revelry be without Santa? Fortunately, his industrious elves will be there, too. And Mrs. Claus? She might stay home and tend to North Pole operations.
  • Singing. Festivities without singing? It’s kind of like peanut butter without bread. Who’s performing? Choral groups from Burncoat High, Worcester Public Schools, Seven Hills Charter School will be among the vocal entertainment on hand.
  • Skating. Skating? Yes, skating! The Festival of Lights 2012 will be held at the new Worcester Common Oval. In fact, this seasonal event marks the rink’s debut. A figure skating competition and free open skate from 6:30 to 8 P.M. are some of the skating treats taking place.

What else is there to know about the Worcester Common Oval?

  • It is located at 455 Main Street in back of Worcester City Hall.
  • The Worcester Sharks Hockey Team will make their home there.
  • It is approximately 33% larger than Rockefeller Center, and Rockefeller Center is impressively sized.
  • Rentals, lockers, and concessions will be available.
  • The general public can skate on weekends, December through February (and other selected times). The cost to get in is $2.00, and skate rentals are $3.00.
  • The facility is state-of-the-art, and it is in Worcester, of course.

Okay, back to The Festival of Lights. The event has several area sponsors and will be held on Friday, November 30, from 5 to 8 P.M. It’s sure to be a great time for all, so put it on your calendar!
